Mediation Training Faculty

Carl D. Schneider, Ph.D.

As Director of Mediation Matters, Carl provides mediation services to clients in the greater Washington D.C. area and conducts training for mediators nationwide. Carl has been mediating for 25 years and training for 20 years. He is also a licensed clinical psychologist and a licensed clinical marriage and family therapist and brings these skills to his practice of mediation.

He is a mediator uniquely able to help clients not only to reach an agreement necessary for the courts but also to achieve a sense of personal closure in their divorce.

He is an Advanced Practitioner Member of the Association for Conflict Resolution and a certified mediator with the Maryland Council for Dispute Resolution and the Supreme Court of Virginia. Carl has been the chair of the Certification Committee for the Maryland Council on Dispute Resolution. He is a member of the Divorce Roundtable of Montgomery County and an Approved Mediator with the Frederick County Civil and Family Mediation Programs, the Howard County and Prince George's County Custody Mediation Programs and the Montgomery County Juvenile Dependency Mediation Program. Carl holds his Ph.D. from Harvard University, and his M. Div. from Union Theological Seminary. He is the author of Shame, Exposure and Privacy (Norton, 1992) and numerous articles in books and journals.

Sharon Pickett, MA.

Sharon has worked as a family mediator since 1999. She is a certified mediator with the Maryland Council on Dispute Resolution and serves as a Reviewer on MCDR’s Certification Committee. She is a Practitioner Member of the Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR), the national association of mediators and conflict resolution professionals, and serves as Associate Editor of the ACR quarterly magazine and as a consultant to the CEO.

Sharon brings more than 30 years experience in education and communications to her role as a mediator. She holds a masters degree from Dartmouth College where she was also a Lecturer in Education and Assistant Dean of Students. Since 1997, she has directed Sharon Pickett & Associates, a consulting firm that provides mediation, communications consulting, and coaching for clients nationwide. Sharon co-mediates and co-trains with Carl Schneider.
